Abstract
Ariha City in Syria faces urgent challenges for post-war reconstruction, including damaged infrastructure and environmental pollution resulting from the conflict. Enhancing urban resilience has become a priority to ensure sustainable recovery and mitigate the ongoing environmental impacts. This study investigates how combining traditional passive design strategies with modern active technological systems can strengthen urban resilience in this context. A two-phase methodology was employed. In the first phase, a field assessment examined existing urban conditions through site surveys, spatial analysis, and documentation of passive and active resilience strategies in both the historic center and new growth areas. In the second phase, 210 structured questionnaires were distributed to professionals in architecture, urban design, and related fields. Responses were analyzed using SPSS with descriptive statistics and One-Way ANOVA to assess perceptions and identify significant differences among participant groups. The findings indicate that while traditional passive strategies are partially preserved in historic areas, they are increasingly compromised by unplanned expansion and the absence of coordinated active systems. Participants strongly supported integrating renewable energy technologies, smart infrastructure, and climate-responsive planning within traditional urban design frameworks. This study contributes a holistic, context-specific framework that combines passive and active strategies, offering practical guidance to enhance urban resilience, address post-war environmental challenges, and support sustainable regeneration in Ariha City.
