Abstract
Introduction: Dens invaginatus also called dens in dente is frequent developmental anomaly, most commonly affect maxillary lateral incisors. It can create an inflammatory and microbial pathway that may compromise pulp vitality. Once detected, intervention must be planned. Aim of the study : This study investigated Dens invaginatus prevalence in maxillary lateral incisors in Egyptian population and its categorization according to Oehlers classification using CBCT. Materials and Methods This study assessed 296 cone beam computed tomography scans including a total number of 592 maxillary lateral incisor. Two experienced examiners: an oral and maxillofacial radiologist and an endodontist, inspected Dens invaginatus in maxillary lateral incisors independently. The axial, coronal and sagittal sections were analyzed systematically. Results: Dens invaginatus was identified in 59 tooth, resulting in an overall prevalence of 9.9% in the examined Egyptian population. Detected teeth with DI were further categorized according to Oehlers classification, Type I, Type II and Type III were detected with prevalence 8.78%, 1.01% and 0.17 % of total investigated maxillary lateral incisors. Bilateral maxillary lateral incisors affected with Dens invaginatus were detected in 90 Patients representing 33.33% in patients diagnosed with Dens invaginatus. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that DI is a relatively prevalent developmental dental anomaly among the Egyptian population. Although the scarcy of Type III, it can compromise pulp vitality and apical health.
