Abstract

Small-scale wind power faces significant challenges in areas characterized by low wind speeds and turbulent wind patterns, limiting its contribution to the global energy demand. To spread the use of wind energy even at regions of low wind speeds, the turbine with wind lens concept was introduced in the literature. This device increases the free stream wind speed at the turbine section which enhances power output of the turbine. Other methods involved using dual rotors to augment power output of the turbine too. In the current study, the performance of single and dual rotors was investigated using wind lens to augment power output of the system. The experiments were conducted using an open-field wind simulator at a nominal wind velocity of approximately 8.5 m/s. Turbine performance was evaluated in terms of power output, rotational speed, tip speed ratio, and power coefficient. The results show that the wind lens significantly improves performance of the wind turbine compared with a bare single-rotor turbine. The peak power coefficient was increased by more than 70% compared to the bare turbine. Introducing a second rotor further enhances performance by increasing aerodynamic torque and extending operation under higher mechanical loading.
