Abstract

Congregation mosque is among the most important historic city components, as it usually occupies a unique site in the city. This study aims to unveil the properties of mosque location in Islamic Cairo, being one of the most important Islamic cities. Space syntax techniques of spatial analysis were utilized in measuring locational properties, namely integration and choice values of street segments associated with a sample of mosque that represent major Islamic eras. Similarities and differences between different mosques and different eras were identified, and it was found that congregation mosque location is more significant than was initially thought, as it is related to functional, social, political, as well as symbolic aspects of mosque value. It was also found that mosque location significance is not fixed over time, as it is in continuous change due to city growth, intentional and unintentional interventions and changes to the urban tissue.
