Abstract
Cultural heritage is a critical symbolised tangible element that depicts memory and characteristics of a previous civilisation. It is considered the present use of the past in the moment and should respond to the today’s needs and demands. However, the gap between its identity and the divergent identities of individuals, especially creative ones, lead to either positive or negative identities outcomes, depending on the type of memory in which the creative expressionism becomes the need. The negative identity outcomes lead to human-related deterioration to the physical cultural heritage especially that creativity differs from an individual to another and the same case applies in identity. Considering that many individuals have creative identities, the negative consequences that raise from the gap between the physical heritage and individuals’ identities increases even further due to the need for expressionism that comes at the expense of the physical cultural heritage. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to investigate divergence of creative identities, its role towards human-related deterioration of physical cultural heritage and the way cultural exhibits can be designed for achieving identities fusion to reduce such divergence. The used methodology consists of two methods (1) reviewing literature to investigate the relationship between creative identities, memories, heritage, culture and cultural heritage, and human-related deterioration (2) presenting and analysing case studies in Egypt to investigate qualitative data of the literature review in real life examples in order to validate the discussed phenomenon. The limitation of this paper is its focus on Egypt for the studied cases to generalize findings from relevant data. However, findings from this research can be utilised in any country that has a valuable cultural heritage to sustain, but further investigations may be needed if it is of different age.
