Abstract

Designing for inclusion in higher education is a multi-faceted endeavor that requires ongoing commitment, innovation and collaboration. Higher education institutions increasingly recognize the need for inclusive design to meet the diverse learning needs of students including those with disabilities. By integrating foundational principles educators can foster environments that support experiential design, active engagement and academic success. This study outlines clear evidence-based strategies that can help advance inclusion within college and university settings. By equipping educational professionals with evidence-based recommendations and strategic approaches, the study promotes practical inclusive design strategies that cater to a broad range of disabilities across various educational settings. The expected outcome is the development of a practical framework that can serve as a set of design guidelines for architects when planning and designing for students with disabilities in higher education. Implementing these principles will create a sustainable, accessible and equitable learning environment that empower students with disabilities to achieve academic success. Moving forward, institutions must develop and implement strategic plans that continuously adapt to the evolving needs of their diverse student populations.
