Abstract

This paper argues that one of the most important roles of contemporary mosques is to support spatial organization and the promotion of urban coherence and principles in the surrounding neighborhoods and its urban context at large. This is not limited to supporting the basic functions of the mosque as a place for worshipers, but it also extends to a wide range of urban, social and cultural interactions among the society.

The objective of this paper is to explore the relationships between the urban design aspects of contemporary mosques and their urban contexts, as well as their role to support social-spatial relations of communities and neighborhoods surrounding them. The paper also targets to identify the major principles and recommendations needed to re-establish the overall structure of mosques to integrate their contemporary architecture within their contexts. Within this framework, the Mosques of Jeddah city are examined to identify the main characteristics of the social-spatial characteristics of the phenomenon and to draw some lessons learned for future planning and design of mosque in related urban conditions.
