Abstract

Lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) are water-soluble materials that are well-known for use in manufacturing medical drugs or coloring food. They have also been explored for another application as a cost-effective and biocompatible medium in biodetection platforms. In this study, LCLCs, which are characterized by their unique anisotropic optical and electrical properties (birefringence and dielectric anisotropy), were employed as a multimodal transducer for biomolecules. Chromonic aggregates of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) and sunset yellow (SSY) exhibited a nematic phase that has the capability of amplifying molecular disturbances near the LC-solid interface in response to the immobilized biomolecules. Bioassay and selective immunoassay were demonstrated, and promising results were presented for recent challenges in biodetection development.
