Abstract

Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are the primary mechanism under the Paris Agreement for countries to present their climate mitigation strategies. However, many NDCs still overlook the potential of advanced biofuels, such as sugarcane biodiesel and cellulosic ethanol, in decarbonizing the transport sector. This policy paper aims to examine the Brazilian case - a global leader in sustainable biofuels - and its well-established production model of sugarcane ethanol and biodiesel as a solution for reducing emissions of atmospheric pollutants that contribute to global warming. Its objective is to advocate for the explicit inclusion of advanced biofuels in NDCs, with clear targets for fossil fuel substitution. The study anticipates that implementation should follow Brazil’s mandatory blending policies (such as B10, B15, and E27), but on a global scale, accelerating the energy transition.
