Abstract
Well-stratified lacustrine deposits ofclay., silt,. and mars ccour withi the rugged mountainous triangle of igneous and metamorphic rocks of Sinal Peninsula, Hgypt- These deposits occur only in two sites alons Wadi Feiran channel Felran and El-Tarta Oases, whete very densel acidic dykes intersect their stream courses. Such dykes played an important role in camr WAST fom- torrential ainfall during the humid Deriod tO form lakes. The SRTM (90, m) data and high-resolution images (IKONOS) have been S uttlized to reconstruict the paleolakes in terins of shapel steland water volume Results show that lake deposits are located where acidic dykes cross narrow channel of high sinuasity. At their former heights, the dykes dammed the surtace runofl, thus, three local reso hwater paleolakes formed behind them. GIS analysis shows that the largest these paleolakes Was formed in the area of Feiran Oasis. Two pther smaller paleolakes were These lake deposits were Fowmed mainty from El-Tih Plateau via Wadi El-Akhdar. Another source of these derived at El-Tarfa Oasis due ta the presence of twa pronounced acidic dykes. t deposits .could have been a thin sedimentary cap aver the weathered granites northeast of Feiran basin.
