Abstract

The Ixtocrl oil spill occurred in 1979 in shallow waters (50 m) of the Bay of Campeche, Mexico, Although it is known that a large r portion of the released il fr from this? second largest accidental marine oil spili in history a th reached the surface, to date there has heen no attempt to document the surface footprint and trajectory of the rcleased oil. ur study attempts to fll his knowledge gap using remote sensing data collected by Landsat/MSS and CZCS.E Both showed the same general patterns of oil trajectory to the northwest a and north, nearly Parallet .Br to the c coastline of the western Gulf of Mcxico (CaM with passible alillanding on Mexican and rexas beaches. Field obseryations at selected beaches and islands along the coast of the western and southern CoM during and after the spill confirmed thesc satellite-based findings, which were als a used ta help in planning a recent fleld campaign to collect sediment samples in the southern GoM.
