Abstract
This book ventures into uncharted territory in international relations, expanding the understanding of influential actors to include transnational dynasties. Grounded in Role Theory, it examines the pivotal contributions of the Rothschild dynasty to the establishment of the Jewish State in 1948. Using the Rothschilds as a case study, it challenges established narratives and highlights the transformative potential of transnational families in shaping global events.
The book meticulously traces the Rothschild dynasty’s multi-faceted influence, revealing their proactive role long before the Zionist movement formally emerged. Their early efforts in advocating for Jewish emancipation within European communities laid the foundation for their later contributions. From 1882 to 1948, the Rothschilds leveraged their networks with global powers, particularly Britain and France, to shield Jewish communities from persecution in Eastern Europe, facilitate Jewish migration to Palestine, and support the establishment of settlements. With strategic insight, they navigated challenges posed by Ottoman authorities, British Mandate policies, and resistance from the Palestinian community, including the 1929 uprisings.
Contrary to the view that the Rothschilds’ impact was limited to the Balfour Declaration of 1917, the book emphasizes the role of the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (PICA) in their broader strategy. PICA significantly shaped population growth, economic development, and territorial transformation in Palestine, showcasing the lasting impact of transnational dynasties on global diplomacy and international relations.
It also explores the Rothschilds’ response to Jewish struggles during World War II, including facilitating migration to Palestine through economic initiatives and political influence. Their reach extended to the British House of Commons, key European governments, and the United States. These efforts underscore the dynasty’s wide-ranging influence, redefining their legacy as a case study of transnational actors shaping political, social, and economic landscapes during a transformative period in history.
