Abstract

Double novel chitosan Schiff-base series (I and II) based on heterocyclic moieties were synthesized to improve the pristine antibacterial capabilities of chitosan. Series (I) chitosan Schiff bases were prepared by reacting chitosan with six derivatives of 4-formyl-1H-pyrazole in an acidic medium, whereas series (II) was prepared by reacting chitosan with six derivatives of 1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-3-aryl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde in an acidic medium. The chemical configurations of the twelve manufactured Schiff bases were verified using FTIR analysis & TGA measurements. We assessed the antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan and its Schiff base derivatives against four standard bacterial species, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, as well as the standard fungal strain Candida albicans. The twelve chitosan-pyrazole Schiff bases showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against pathogens of therapeutic importance. In particular, the 4-vinylbenzyl group (series II) exhibited increased effectiveness against Gram-negative organisms. The results demonstrated that the Schiff base derivatives exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than chitosan, with the degree of inhibition differing according to the substitution pattern. These observations suggest that the newly synthesized Schiff bases might possess considerable potential for biomedical applications, particularly as antimicrobial wound dressing materials aimed at promoting wound healing.
